Poor finishing saw Air-India settle for a draw against Mohammedan Sporting in their I-League match at the Cooperage on Sunday. The 1-1 result meant the pre-game favourites could take just one point from a game they were expected to win.
The home team took the lead in the 19th minute when Sporting custodian Naseem Akhtar misjudged the flight of a ball by Air-Indias Subhash Singh and the ball landed in the net. Eugene Gray later restored parity for the visitors in the 61st minute when he headed in a volley from Jothi Kumar.
It was a complete failure of my players, who fumbled at the finish, admitted Air India coach Bimal Ghosh.
After dominating the first half, where they took the lead, the airmen surprisingly took the defensive approach in the second half, which allowed the Kolkata side to come back into the game. There were no instructions for a defensive approach from me, Ghosh clarified.
Michael Tayo was named the man of the match, even though he was sent off after getting a red card for deliberately handling the ball in the last minutes of the game.
Sporting coach Shabbir Ali expressed complete displeasure over the standard of refereeing. The refereeing wasnt up to the mark. We could have done better but most of the decisions went against us, observed the former international.
