Telangana Election Results 2024 Live: Congress, BJP tied in Telangana, BRS comes a cropper

BRS working president K T Rama Rao on Tuesday conceded defeat after the party was not leading in any of the 17 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana, but expressed confidence that it would rise like a phoenix.

The ruling Congress and BJP appeared set to win eight seats each in the state as the counting of votes reached the final stages on Tuesday.

BJP sitting MP D Arvind has rertained the Nizamabad Lok Sabha seat in Telangana with a majority of over one lakh votes.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (formerly Telangana Rashtra Samithi) emerged victorious in Telangana by clinching a majority, securing 9 out of the 17 seats. Meanwhile, the AIMIM maintained its dominance in Hyderabad, with Asaduddin Owaisi securing victory. The BJP made notable strides in the state, securing four seats, while the Congress managed to win three.

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi is leading from the Hyderabad constituency with a margin of 3,38,335 votes.

Congress candidate from Nalgonda in Telangana Kunduru Raghuveer Reddy was leading with a massive margin of over 5.37 lakh votes over his nearest BJP rival Saidi Reddy Shanampudi at 2.45 PM as the counting of votes reached the final stages on Tuesday.

Raghuveer, son of senior Congress leader and former minister K Jana Reddy, got 7,53,464 votes, while Saidi Reddy secured 2,15,662 votes as per the Election Commission website.

Mahbubnagar Constituency (Const. No. 11): In Mahbubnagar, Aruna. D. K from the Bharatiya Janata Party is in a direct fight with with Challa Vamshi Chand Reddy of the Indian National Congress. With a margin of 11,339 votes, the race intensifies as the counting progresses.

Mahabubabad Constituency (Const. No. 16): Balram Naik Porika of the Indian National Congress is competing against Kavitha Maloth of the BRS. The vote margin stands at 324,970.

Khammam Constituency (Const. No. 17): A captivating battle unfolds in Khammam, where Ramasahayam Raghuram Reddy from the Indian National Congress contests against Nama Nageswara Rao of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi. The margin stands at a significant 456,704 votes.

Karimnagar Constituency (Const. No. 3): Bharatiya Janata Party's Bandi Sanjay Kumar leads against Velchala Rajender Rao of the Indian National Congress by a margin of 177,941 votes, with constituents eagerly awaiting the final outcome.

In Hyderabad's 9th constituency, Asaduddin Owaisi of the All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen is leading against Madhavi Latha Kompella of the Bharatiya Janata Party, with the result currently pending 

The Chevella constituency, where Konda Vishweshwar Reddy represents the Bharatiya Janata Party, is witnessing a tight race against Dr. Gaddam Ranjith Reddy of the Indian National Congress, with the result still in progress, as 106,421 votes are being counted.

In the Bhongir constituency, Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy from the Indian National Congress has a lead against Dr. Boora Narsaiah Goud from the Bharatiya Janata Party with a margin of 180,148 votes.

In a reversal of the 2019 results, the ruling YSRCP government, led by Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, has been decimated by the TDP-led alliance comprising the TDP, BJP, and Jana Sena Party. Preliminary results indicate that the NDA alliance is leading in over 150 of the 175 Assembly seats and 21 of the 25 Lok Sabha seats, a stark contrast to the YSRCP's 2019 landslide victory.

According to latest trends from the counting of voted polled for the May 13 Lok Sabha polls, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi maintained his lead against his nearest BJP rival K Madhavi Latha by over 70,000 votes.

The BJP candidates were leading in Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Medak, Secunderabad, Malkajgiri, Chevella and Mahabubnagar LS seats.

The Congress nominees were leading in Peddapalle (SC), Mahabubabad (ST), Warangal (SC), Bhongir, Khammam, Nalgonda, Nagarkurnool (SC) and Zaheerabad.

The K Chandrasekhar Rao-led BRS appeared to be the biggest loser as the party was not leading in any of the constituencies. The party had won nine seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The BRS had suffered a defeat in the Legislative Assembly polls held in November last year. PTI

The BJP had won four seats, while Congress bagged three constituencies in the 2019 general elections.

The counting votes in Telangana began at 8 am.

The polling was held in a single phase on May 13. 

Telangana BJP chief G Kishan Reddy was leading by 11,677 votes against his nearest Congress rival Danam Nagender after the completion of first round of counting of votes in Secunderabad Lok Sabha constituency on Tuesday.

While Kishan Reddy got 32,193 votes, Nagender secured 20,516 votes in the first round, official sources said.

BJP National General Secretary and sitting MP Bandi Sanjay Kumar was leading in Karimnagar by 12,468 votes after the first round. 

As per the latest updates, Congress is leading in eight seats, and BJP in seven, while BRS and Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM are ahead in one seat each.

The Rajahmundry Lok Sabha seat is witnessing a tight contest between the candidates of the major political alliances. According to the latest trends:

Dr. Daggubati Purandeswari, the Andhra Pradesh BJP president and daughter of former Chief Minister N.T. Rama Rao, is leading the race with over 50,000 votes.

Purandeswari, a former Congress MP who joined the BJP in 2014, is locked in a close fight against the Congress candidate Gidugu Rudra Raju and the YSRCP's Guduri Srinivas.

Purandeswari's candidature is seen as significant as the BJP seeks to forge an alliance with the TDP and Jana Sena Party (JSP) to counter the ruling YSRCP in Andhra Pradesh.

Her political experience and background as the daughter of TDP founder N.T. Rama Rao have been leveraged by the BJP to strengthen its foothold in the state.

The Rajahmundry results will be crucial in determining the BJP's performance and its ability to forge a united opposition alliance against the YSRCP in the state. The contest remains closely poised, with Purandeswari maintaining a slim lead over her rivals as counting continues. 

The Lok Sabha elections in Telangana have yielded interesting results, with the BJP leading in several key constituencies including Malkajgiri, Chevella, Secunderabad, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Mahbubnagar, and Adilabad. On the other hand, the Congress has taken the lead in Nalgonda, Bhongir, Khammam, Zahirabad, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Peddapalli, and Nagarkurnool. Additionally, the BRS has established a narrow margin in the Medak district.

In Telangana, the Congress is now leading in nine Lok Sabha seats, while the BJP is leading in six. Asaduddin Owaisi is still leading in Hyderabad.

Eatala Rajender is a 60-year-old BJP candidate from Telangana. He holds a graduate degree. According to the latest disclosures, he has 45 criminal cases registered against him. He also has liabilities amounting to 20.4 crore rupees.

The sitting BJP MP from Karimnagar Bandi Sanjay Kumar is in the lead. Kumar, a former president of the Telangana BJP, resigned from his position on July 4, 2023. Later, G Kishan Reddy assumed the role of the new Telangana BJP president.

In Telangana, the BJP is leading in Karimnagar, Malkajgiri, Secunderabad, Adilabad and Nizamabad. 

In Telangana, where polling was held on May 13 for the 17 Lok Sabha seats, the most watched contest is in Hyderabad between four-time MP and AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi and K Madhavi Latha and Owaisi appears to be leading comfortably in the postal ballots counting in all the seven assembly under the Hyderabad lok sabha seat including Malakpet, Goshamahal, Karwan, Charminar, Chandrayangutta, Yakutpura and Barkatpur. Latha had raised the BJP's hopes of putting up a good fight but she landed in controversy when  On April 17, a video purportedly showed her symbolically shooting an arrow in the direction of a mosque during the Sri Rama Navami rally. She later apologised and claimed that the video clip was incomplete. In Karimnagar, sitting MP Bandi Sanjay Kumar established a slender lead, in Malkagiri lok sabha seat, Etela Rajender also established a slender lead. The Congress is leading in three seats.

In Telangana, the BJP leading in two Lok Sabha seats, while the Congress is leading in one after postal ballot counting.

Initial trends show Asaduddin Owaisi, the All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) candidate, is leading in Hyderabad.   

Counting is underway for 17 Lok Sabha seats in underway in Telangana. Presently, postal ballots are being counted and EVM votes will begin at around 8.30 am.

As votes were being cast in the fourth phase of the Lok Sabha election on Monday (May 13), the BJP candidate in Hyderabad, Madhavi Latha, was captured on video asking niqab-wearing women voters to remove their face coverings so she could verify their identities.

Hyderabad Police registered an FIR against Latha under IPC sections pertaining to undue influence at an election (171C), obstructing a public servant (186), and intent to incite (505(1)(c)), and Section 132 of The Representation of the People Act, 1951 (misconduct at the polling station).

In a surprising turn of events, the upcoming Lok Sabha election in 2024 is shaping up to be a closely contested battle in Hyderabad. The BRS is contending with significant hurdles that stem not only from external political dynamics but also from deeply ingrained perceptions and demographic realities. It is grappling with a pervasive narrative that took root during the 2023 Assembly elections, characterised by the widespread criticism of the perceived arrogance growing out of a decade of family-centric governance, the inaccessibility of its leaders, serious corruption charges and, notably, the failure to fulfil promises to key voter groups such as Dalits and unemployed youths. A key development also is the weakening of the BRS’s informal alliance with the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul-Muslimeen (AIMIM). After the Congress secured 64 out of 119 Assembly seats in the 2023 elections, it began courting AIMIM, which holds seven seats, to mitigate any future threats to its stability

. This courtship by Congress appears to be succeeding, posing a considerable risk to the BRS as it stands to lose a crucial ally, further destabilising its position in the state. Concurrently, the BJP, recognising the BRS’s vulnerabilities, has intensified its efforts to erode the party’s support base. Despite traditionally lacking strong local cadres and a broad appeal in Telangana, the BJP has been capitalising on the so-called Modi wave to attract disenchanted BRS cadres and voters. The BJP, however, struggles to field strong candidates from its own ranks and has thus been focusing its recruitment efforts on BRS’s ranks. Furthermore, the BRS is finding it increasingly challenging to maintain even a semblance of its previous tacit understanding with the BJP, complicating its strategic options. This dynamic not only highlights the opportunistic nature of party politics in the region but also underscores the precarious position of the BRS as it navigates these turbulent political waters.

Over a decade since the formation of the state, the fervour of the Telangana Movement, which once galvanised significant public and political support, has faded. This waning sentiment presents a significant challenge for the BRS, which had capitalised on regional pride to ascend to power. Initially, the movement’s success was a testament to the effective mobilisation and strong emotional appeal crafted by the BRS leadership, embodying the aspirations for a “Bangaru Telangana” or golden state. However, as the initial enthusiasm has subsided and the realities of governance have set in, the BRS has struggled to maintain its momentum. The lack of new milestones or significant achievements to rally the populace has left the party vulnerable, struggling to invoke the same level of regional sentiment that once secured it a robust electoral mandate. This shift has left the BRS scrambling to redefine its political strategy in an environment where its foundational appeal has diminished, making it increasingly difficult to engage voters with the same intensity as in past elections. The party has also suffered from defections to the BJP and Congress just before the elections, weakening its prospects further. Notably, the BRS, which had initiated “Operation Akarshan” to attract leaders from these two parties, is now seeing a reversal of this trend. The party finds itself in a challenging position, holding the majority with 9 out of 17 Lok Sabha seats, yet struggling to field candidates across many constituencies. First, the morale within the party has significantly declined following its unexpected loss in the 2023 assembly elections, where it secured only 39 of the 119 seats. The TDP-Jana Sena Party, boosted by an alliance with the BJP, was seen as making big gains in the state, and the exit polls gave the NDA up to 22 seats, if not more, out of 25. In 2019, the YSRCP had won 22 seats.

If the YSRCP ends up with as little as predicted, it would mean that the anti-incumbency factor held strong, despite its attempts to dodge that with mass change of candidates. It would also mean that the NDA alliance led by the TDP got its poll arithmetic right in terms of seat-sharing.

“We have ensured that Section 144 is promulgated in all the counting centres. Around 100 meters of the counting centres will be a prohibited area for any non-authorised person to enter. We have placed a three-tier security to guard the strong room and counting area. In all seven Assembly segments of Hyderabad, we have issued IDs to the polling agents so that they can enter the counting halls tomorrow and watch the counting process.
