Launching a scathing attack on the Congress at his virtual meeting with the BJP workers across 58,000 Karnataka booths ahead of the May 10 Assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday dismissed the principal Opposition party’s pre-poll guarantees for the poor as “lies”.

“There is no meaning of the guarantees of a party (Congress) whose warranty has expired,” PM Modi said to a question from a party worker on strategies to counter the Congress’s announcement of poll guarantees, which is said to be giving it traction in the fray.

“The Congress means guarantee of lies, Congress means guarantee of corruption, Congress guarantees dynastic politics of brothers and cousins. We are now in a situation where they cannot give proper guarantees and the youths know that the Congress warranty has expired long ago,” Modi said during his interaction with the BJP workers.

The Congress has announced five poll guarantees so far, pledging their implementation in the event of the party coming to power. These pledges include Rs 2000 a month for a woman head in every family, free power of 200 units for every house, 10 kg of rice for every member of a family, Rs 3000 per month for two years for unemployed graduates, and free travel for women in government buses.

Asked about the methods to counter the Congress guarantees which are said to be winning it support from people affected by the rising cost of living, Modi said that providing freebies is “short-sighted” and a burden on the exchequer, claiming that the BJP provides some freebies on a temporary basis when the situation warrants it.

“I want to warn the youths that the people who are distributing freebies are trying to fool you. The youths must think of their future and the future of their children. In the path that we have taken as a country the benefits will accrue to Karnataka as well,” the PM said.

“In our country a few political parties have reduced politics to an avenue of power and corruption. To obtain this they are willing to go to any extent. In these parties there is no regard for the future of the country. Due to the politics of freebies many states are incurring huge expenditures to maintain their political standing,” Modi said.

“Governments cannot exist on the basis of day to day living but it needs to work on creating wealth so that the lives of people are secured in the future as well. The BJP does not take shortcuts…but works for the building of India. Some people will cross the railway tracks even when there is a pedestrian walk and a sign that says ‘shortcut will cut you short’,” he said.

“We do provide some freebies to deal with temporary challenges. We give help to the poor and it is the duty of the government. During corona time we gave free vaccines and it is helping and we gave free rations. However, to take the country forward we have to be free from this culture of freebies,” the PM said.

The BJP is focusing on building a modern, technological and social infrastructure in the country for the current and future generations, he said, claiming that the party dispensation’s focus is on roads, railways, airports, ports, solar power, housing for the poor, drinking water, gas pipelines, medical colleges, AIIMS, IITs and IIITs.

The PM called upon the BJP workers to ensure that their voters go to the booths on the polling day to ensure the party’s victory. “You have to take voters to the booths. Irrespective of how strong the wind is, the cycle tubes will not fill up on their own. There is a need for pumps. There is a storm and blessings but it is necessary for voters to be taken to the booths. Strength at the booths is a guarantee of victory,” Modi said, adding “You must play with full confidence on the front foot and reach the target”.

The PM is set to undertake a series of visits to Karnataka to campaign for the BJP from April 29.
