(Reuters photo)Presidential Debate 2024 Live Donald Trump vs Kamala Harris: With less than two months until Election Day and just hours before Alabama starts mailing early ballots on Wednesday, according to an AP report, the debate provided a revealing glimpse into the tumultuous presidential race. In their first and possibly only debate before the election, Kamala Harris made a vigorous case against Donald Trump, challenging him on abortion, immigration, Israel-Gaza and Russia-Ukraine wars, and American democracy, indicating their sharply contrasting visions for the country. While Trump called Biden-Harris “the worst president, the worst vice president in the history of our country,” Harris said, “And I do believe that the American people know we all have so much more in common than what separates us, and we can chart a new way forward,” Harris said.
Minutes after the debate concluded, American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift took to Instagram to endorse Harris for President, calling her a “steady-handed, gifted leader.” She said she believes “we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos.” Harris criticized Trump for putting the nation into a state of “worst employment” since the Great Depression, during his term. The first presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, in June, turned out to be a disaster for the Democrats with Trump winning the debate, riding on Biden’s weak articulation and a speech that was unconvincing and repetitive.
What is at stake? With the clock ticking for the November elections, Harris, who entered the race just seven weeks ago, has limited time to define her candidacy and win over voters. So far, Harris has avoided committing to specific policy positions, this is opportunity to define herself in juxtaposition with Trump, and seize the narrative from her opponent. Meanwhile, Trump’s supporters hope he can stay focused and turn around what has been a challenging summer for his campaign as the former president is known for thriving in the spotlight and shaping political conversations, particularly on popular issues like immigration and trade.

US Presidential debate: Why Donald Trump had no chance before a Kamala Harris who had done her homework
Kamala Harris’s greatest advantage as she runs for President of the United States at this moment in history is that she is not a White man. More specifically, that she is neither Joe Biden nor Donald Trump, as she made clear at various points during the live presidential debate with the latter on September 10 — the first time the two were facing off.
Harris underlined this by striding over to her opponent’s side of the room, giving him a firm shake of the hand and introducing herself. Some opening jitters aside, Harris went into the debate sounding calm and in control, with a clarity of speech that would have soothed any Democratic fears going back to the disastrous June night when Trump, so to speak, wiped the floor with a clearly in-over-his-head Joe Biden.

Trump-Kamala debate: How US media fact-checked the presidential nominees on US economy, immigration
During a pivotal debate between United States Vice President Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump as part of the 2024 campaign on Wednesday, both candidates clashed over key issues such as the economy, immigration, and abortion.
Donald Trump, in particular, made a series of inaccurate statements, including false claims about immigrants “eating pets,” his ties to Project 2025, and abortion, among other issues raised during their heated exchange in Philadelphia.
Here’s how the US media fact-checked the duo:
Kamala Harris: “As of today, there is not one member of the United States military who is on active duty in a combat zone, in any war zone around the world, for the first time this century.”
NYT fact-checks: “This needs context,” says the New York Times. Since the Hamas attacks on October 7, thousands of US troops have been drawn into hostilities in the Middle East. While not engaged in a full-scale war like in Iraq or Afghanistan, they are involved in various operations.
Donald Trump: “Abortions are taking place in the ninth month of pregnancy..”
The Guardian fact-checks: Fewer than 1% of abortions are performed after 21 weeks of pregnancy. When they do occur, it’s typically due to medical emergencies or severe fetal anomalies. Additionally, Trump has suggested on several occasions that abortions happen after birth. However, infanticide, or killing a newborn, is illegal in all 50 states, according to The Guardian.

We don't eat cats and dogs: German foreign ministry reacts to Trump's false claims on immigrants eating pets
Germany's foreign ministry mocked Trump's false assertion about immigrants eating pets in a post on X on Wednesday while pushing back against his criticism of German energy policy.
"Like it or not: Germany’s energy system is fully operational, with more than 50% renewables. And we are shutting down – not building – coal & nuclear plants. Coal will be off the grid by 2038 at the latest. PS: We also don’t eat cats and dogs," the post said.
Trump amplified a false claim in Tuesday's debate with Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris that numerous Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were stealing residents' pets or taking wildlife from parks for food, according to a Reuters report.
He also criticized Harris' plan for promoting a diverse and sustainable mix of energy sources, saying Germany had tried and failed to give up fossil fuels.

Five takeaways from the Harris-Trump Presidential Debate
The Diplomatic Editor of the Indian Express writes about the five key takeaways from the Harris-Trump Presidential Debate.
1. The style and atmospherics: Smiling Harris, angry Trump
Harris was calm and assertive, bringing out her natural prosecutorial skills to charge at Trump’s past — his criminal convictions, the January 6 Capitol Hill attack under his watch, and the fact that world leaders laugh at him. Trump was provoked, and he was angry, almost yelling, trying to counter them.
2. The domestic economy and politics debate: ‘Marxist’; ‘tired old lies’
The economy, abortion, immigration, and health care were among the top issues that were discussed during the debate. Harris criticized Trump’s past actions and policies, while Trump dismissed her arguments as 'Marxist' and 'tired old lies.'

Trump also contended that some states allow babies to be aborted after birth, a point corrected by ABC News moderator, Linsey Davis, according to Reuters.
Meanwhile, Harris flashed outrage at Trump's assertion that abortion becoming a states-rights issue was a popular result, while referring to states that have passed restrictive bans.
“This is what people wanted?” Harris asked. “People being denied care in an emergency room because healthcare providers are being afraid of being hauled off to jail?" (Reuters)

The debate guidelines between the Trump and Harris campaigns were the subject of contention. The Harris campaign had advocated for live or “hot” microphones to facilitate more dynamic exchanges between the candidates. Conversely, Trump’s campaign preferred that the microphones be muted, as was done during the first debate with Joe Biden.
ABC News has confirmed that microphones for both candidates will indeed be muted while the opponent is speaking. The agreed-upon rules for the debate are as follows:
- No opening statements will be allowed; closing statements are limited to two minutes per candidate.
- Candidates will remain behind podiums throughout the debate.
- Props and prewritten notes are prohibited on stage.
- Topics and questions will not be disclosed beforehand.
- Candidates cannot ask each other questions.
- Each candidate will have two minutes to answer questions, with an additional two minutes for rebuttals and one minute for follow-ups, clarifications, or responses.
Following a virtual coin toss, Trump chose to deliver the second closing remarks, while Harris selected the right podium position on the screen, positioning Trump on the left.
