Barack Obama, China’s Xi discuss economic, security issues

Obama reinforced his commitment to a US-China investment treaty.

Barack Obama and Xi Jinping are meeting in Beijing amid significant tensions, both old and new.

President Barack Obama is encouraging Chinese President Xi Jinping (shee jihn-peeng) to continue his nation’s financial moves toward consumer-led growth and a market-determined exchange rate.

The White House says the two presidents spoke by telephone Tuesday night.

Obama reinforced his commitment to a US-China investment treaty, and encouraged Xi to work more closely with the US on cybersecurity issues. And the two leaders agreed to work together on other security issues, including negotiations with Iran intended to stop that country from obtaining nuclear weapons.

Obama also thanked Xi for China’s contributions to containing the Ebola crisis in West Africa and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. And Obama said he looks forward to Xi’s state visit to Washington later this year.
