The metro will operate the whole day, but access points will be restricted to two per station. (Express Photo: Khushboo Narayan)A month after the terror attack that killed at least 16 people, the Maelbeek metro station in Brussels re-opened on Monday. The station, about 300 metres from the European Commission headquarters, was the second of two sites that was attacked on March 22 this year. This was also the spot where the lone Indian victim of these attacks, an employee of Infosys, died. Two other blasts occurred at Brussel’s Zavantem airport.
A spokesperson for the Brussels public transport authority, Stib-Mivb, told news channel FRANCE24 that the damage to the Maelbeek station was limited to its artwork. AFP reported another spokeswoman as saying that one of the damaged portraits will be covered by a remembrance wall where people can leave messages.
Most of the commuters at Maelbeek station said the city is gradually coming to terms with the attack and are hopeful that their government will surmount the challenge of terrorism.

“We will overcome this too. You get emotional when you come here. You feel it inside. Our government will overcome terrorism,” said Paul Nemitz, director, Fundamental Rights and Union Citizenship at European Commission, who took the metro for the first time Monday.
“I take the subway everyday so it was very emotional for us because our colleague was travelling that day and he was not as blessed as us. Physically, emotionally and psychologically it is very tough. But I think of all the people elsewhere, we are not the only victims here in Belgium. What I regret here in Belgium is that we are just talking about ourselves and not the others who have been victims of such attacks in other countries. They are suffering as much as we are. Terrorism is not about religion, it is about power and money,” said another commuter, Elizabeth Strapen.
According to the website of Stib-Mivb, all metro stations are open in the city and the metro will operate the whole day, though access points will be restricted to a maximum of two per station. The Brussels attack happened four months after a similar attack was carried out in Paris. Investigators believe that there is a link between the perpetrators of both incidents.
