The United States has confirmed a human case of bird flu in a patient from Missouri who had no known contact with infected animals. The individual was hospitalised and has since recovered, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

This is the 14th human case of bird flu in the US this year but notably, the first without any direct occupational exposure to infected animals, as the CDC highlighted in a statement. Previous cases in the US were linked to contact with poultry or cattle.

Health officials discovered this particular case during routine flu season surveillance, and the patient, who had underlying health issues, received antiviral treatment for flu, as reported by BBC.

Despite this, the CDC reassured that the overall risk to the public remains low. Bird flu, primarily affecting birds and some animals, is rare in humans. The virus first emerged in China in the 1990s and has since spread worldwide, affecting not just birds but also animals such as sea lions, seals, and bears, according to a report by BBC.

This year, outbreaks of bird flu have been on the rise, particularly among cattle in 14 states as of early September, though no outbreaks have been recorded in Missouri’s cattle. Nonetheless, poultry and wild bird populations in the state have experienced cases this year.
