US President Donald Trump’s administration has reportedly moved the portraits of former Presidents Barack Obama, George W Bush, and George HW Bush to a less prominent position and away from the public display to the top of Grand Staircase in the White House, which only a few can access, CNN reported.

Highlighting the tension between the serving US president and his predecessors, Trump reportedly directed the White House staff to move the portraits to the top of the Grand Staircase, where it will be out of sight for thousands of visitors who visit the White House on a regular basis. The CNN report added that portraits of both the Bushes have also been moved to the same area.

The report states that a Grand Staircase photo of the White House confirmed the development wherein the portrait of Obama could be seen hanging at the top of the stairwell in a corner, at the landing of the entrance to the private residence. That particular area is exclusively visited by the first family, US Secret Service agents, a limited White House staff and executive residence staff.

However, it isn’t the first attempt at repositioning the Obama portrait in the White House. After coming to the White House for his second tenure, a painting of an iconic scene of Trump surviving an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania replaced the Obama portrait which was moved across the Grand Foyer of the White House in April.

According to White House protocol, the precedent calls for the portrait of the most recent president to be given most prominent placement while entering the president’s mansion.

The moving of Obama’s portrait comes at a time when tensions between the two leaders have escalated. A portrait of former President Joe Biden has not yet been completed. Obama has been an open critique of Trump’s first and the current tenure.
