As per a campus message sent by university president Christopher Eisgruber, Princeton received the notice this week stating the suspension of federal grants by agencies including the Department of Energy, NASA and the Defense Department.
Princeton University President Christopher Eisgruber, however, said that the “rationale” behind the decision to suspend federal funding “isn’t clear at the moment”.
“Princeton University will comply with the law. We are committed to fighting antisemitism and all forms of discrimination, and we will cooperate with the government in combating antisemitism. Princeton will also vigorously defend academic freedom and the due process rights of this University,” Eisgruber said, as quoted by CNN.
Since President Donald Trump took office for the second tenure in January, his administration has been targeting the Ivy League schools and Princeton University is the latest among them.
Earlier, the Trump administration cancelled the federal funding of $400 million to Columbia University over antisemitism on campus, paused the $175 million funding of University of Pennsylvania, and ordered a review of $9 billion contracts and grants awarded to Harvard University as part of its campaign against antisemitism on campus.
Princeton University is among the 60 varsities which received a warning letter from the Department of Education in March over allegations of antisemitism on campus.
“The attack on Columbia is a radical threat to scholarly excellence and to America’s leadership in research,” Eisgruber wrote in a March 19 essay.
