The Sri Lankan police have arrested three individuals on suspicion of plotting an attack against Israeli tourists in the eastern surfing resort of Arugam Bay, following a tip-off from Indian intelligence, authorities confirmed on Thursday, news agency PTI reported.

Public Security Minister Vijitha Herath stated that all three suspects, detained by the Terrorism Investigation Division, are Sri Lankan nationals. They are currently being questioned to determine whether they were planning an attack targeting Israelis, according to Herath.

Initially, police had announced the arrest of two individuals, citing intelligence from India which warned of a potential attack between 19 and 23 October.

On Wednesday, the US Embassy and the British High Commission in Colombo issued statements advising their citizens to avoid Arugam Bay, citing credible information about a possible threat. Tourists were urged to steer clear of the area until further notice.

In response to opposition criticism over the delayed public announcement, Minister Herath explained, “We didn’t inform the public until the information could be verified.” He also noted that the government acted swiftly upon receiving intelligence that tourists in Sri Lanka might be at risk.

He added that the government had moved quickly to ensure security across coastal areas and tourist sites following the warning, with measures now in place to protect all visitors.

US Ambassador Julie Chung reportedly informed the Sri Lankan government about the travel advisory regarding the Arugam Bay security situation. The US has advised its citizens to avoid the popular tourist destination until further notice, and security in the area has been heightened.

Police confirmed that security efforts have also been extended to the southern and southeastern coastal resorts.

Sri Lanka’s Muslim minority groups have been holding ongoing anti-Israel protests in condemnation of the wars in Gaza and Lebanon. Social media has seen several posts calling for a boycott of Israeli businesses along the east coast.

The police have assured that protection will be provided to all foreign nationals, and a dedicated hotline has been established for tourists to report any suspicious activity.
