Meeting over tariffs: Ahead of meeting with PM Modi, President Donald Trump today announced sweeping “reciprocal tariffs” hitting both allies and competitors. “Traditionally, India is right at the top of the pack,” Trump said, citing high tariffs on US goods. He recalled how Harley-Davidson struggled to sell motorcycles in India due to excessive tariffs, forcing the company to build a factory there to bypass duties. “That’s what people can do with us. They can build a factory here… that includes medical, cars, chips, and semiconductors,” he added. India slashed tariffs on high-end motorcycles, benefiting Harley-Davidson—a move likely aimed at easing trade tensions with President Trump.

Defying the traditional scepticism and more recent anxiety about India’s relations with the United States, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump outlined an expansive agenda for deepening the bilateral strategic partnership. The personal chemistry between the two leaders and the broader convergence of Indian and American strategic interests has set the stage for resolving difficult issues and making advances across a broad range of areas.

Modi and his team were quick to recognise the historic changes unfolding in US domestic and foreign policies unleashed by Trump and finding ways to seize the new possibilities emerging in Washington. While Modi has been quick, his challenge lies in galvanising the sluggish Indian bureaucracy to turn the new American opportunities into concrete outcomes. Success also depends on the government’s appetite for reforms. - C. Raja Mohan

PM Modi US Visit Live Updates: UK faces rare goods trade deficit with US amid Trump’s tariff threats

The UK recorded a goods trade deficit of 164 million pounds ($205 million) with the US in the fourth quarter of 2024, reversing a 713 million-pound surplus from the previous quarter, reported Reuters. This marks the first goods trade deficit since 2011, excluding pandemic-related fluctuations. The deficit comes amid concerns over President Trump’s tariff plans, which target countries with trade surpluses.

While Trump has suggested possible negotiations with the UK, he later criticized the “huge” trade deficit with Britain. Despite the deficit, both countries report overall trade surpluses when factoring in goods and services. The US is a significant fuel supplier to the UK, and machinery and transport equipment make up the largest trade categories. The data also highlights Britain’s shift toward services trade. UK goods exports to the EU slumped, widening the goods trade deficit with the EU to a record 32.9 billion pounds in Q4, as per Reuters.

Economists predict the trade deficit will remain significant in 2025 due to rising energy costs and Trump’s tariff threats. "The trade deficit will likely remain wide in 2025 as rising wholesale energy prices raise import costs and President Trump's tariff threats undermine global trade," said economist Elliot Jordan-Doak, as per Reuters.

"Any agreement without us will fail, because you need Europe and Ukraine to also implement the agreement," said EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. "Any quick fix is a dirty deal."

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha echoed this, stating, "Nothing can be discussed on Ukraine without Ukraine or on Europe without Europe," as per Reuters. Kallas warned against conceding to Russian demands before talks even begin, adding that Europe would continue supporting Ukraine if it rejected a deal made behind its back.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the Trump White House on February 12-13. Trump is in the fourth week of his second presidency and, officials say, this is the earliest in an American President’s term that an Indian Prime Minister has visited him.

Since his inauguration on January 20, Trump has so far met only Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. A meeting with Jordan’s King Abdullah was scheduled for Tuesday.

    A personal rapport

As of now, Trump appears focussed on his domestic agenda. He has also spoken of a controversial plan for Gaza, and imposed trade tariffs on several countries and categories of goods. The last, especially, is an area of concern for India.

    Strategic alignment on China

Trump became the first US President to name China as a strategic threat and rival for the US. This was spelt out in the National Security Strategy in 2017.

McMaster wrote, “Japanese national security advisor Yachi Shotaro and Indian foreign secretary Subrahmanyam Jaishankar both shared their grave concerns over China’s increasingly aggressive behaviour.”

PM Modi US Visit Live Updates: What does Modi's meeting with Trump mean for relationship between India, US and China?

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi makes his way to the United States, here's what experts have to say on what his meeting with US president Donald Trump would mean for the relationship between India, China and the US:

India is seen as integral to the US strategy of containing China in the Indo-Pacific, the Associated Press noted.

But India will likely have to recalibrate its stand in case of a Washington-Beijing thaw under Trump.

“Trump’s outreach to China will complicate India’s ability to cultivate the American desire to use India as a proxy against China without actually ever becoming one,” said Happymon Jacob, founder of the New Delhi-based Council for Strategic and Defense Research, AP quoted.

“Even a tactical accommodation between the U.S. and China has implications for India,” Meera Shankar, India's former diplomat to the US, emphasized. (AP)

PM Modi US Visit Live Updates | When PM Modi meets President Trump: The key will lie in layering India’s preferences onto the White House’s plans

With an hour to go before Prime Minister Narendra Modi lands in the United States, you might like to delve deeper on how the meeting between the Indian PM and US president Donald Trump would pan out amid trade, tariff and visa talks.

We bring you, from our Opinion section, Rorry Daniels' piece on what matters now between the two countries:

"What matters now for the India-US relationship is finding the areas on the margins of both sides’ ambitions where interests align. Beyond the immediate concerns of protecting the US domestic economy through trade restrictions and immigration sweeps, President Trump has ambitions to have the US industry lead in global development...," Daniels writes.

"India may consider how to make itself a key partner in both lines of effort without eroding the non-alignment that has been a hallmark of its global presence. The key will lie in layering India’s preferences onto the Trump administration’s actions."

PM Modi US Visit Live Updates: Modi and Trump's bonhomie to be tested?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s longstanding bonhomie with President Donald Trump could be tested as the former geras up to visit Washington on Wednesday, eager to avoid tariffs that have been slapped on other countries, as well as threats of further taxes and imports, The Associated Press highlighted.

As tariff threats loom, the question remains how much a good rapport between two leaders matters and how far India will go to cut a deal.

Last month, when Modi spoke with Trump, the US president "emphasized the importance of India increasing its procurement of American-made security equipment and moving toward a fair bilateral trading relationship," as per a readout released by the White House.

    (Inputs from AP)

    Experts weigh in:

  • Meera Shankar, India’s former ambassador to the US, the two can build on the areas of convergence and “minimize areas of friction without conceding on core areas of national interest." “Most other partners have their reciprocal lists ready from the word go, because it’s a point of leverage when you negotiate," Shankar added, expressing hope that India “will find the right balance between firmness and flexibility” on the tariffs issue.
  • “Another thing we can expect is that Modi would offer to purchase more American (natural) gas to narrow the U.S. trade deficit," Lisa Curtis, the director of the Indo-Pacific security program at the Center for a New American Security, a Washington-based think tank told news agency AP. “This will help a little bit.”
  • Raja Mohan, an analyst at the Institute of South Asian Studies in Singapore, said Modi's visit will be a good time to advance Indo-US ties. “India’s diplomatic skills will be tested, so the general goodwill that exists between Trump and Modi should be translated into concrete outcomes,” Mohan said. PM Modi US Visit Live Updates | C Raja Mohan writes on Modi-Trump meet: Let’s make deals

With only a few hours left for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to arrive in the United States, we bring to you, from our Opinion pages today, C Raja Mohan's exclusive on how the meeting could serve as an opportunity to enable pragmatic engagement across sectors.

Mohan writes: "It is a moment of continuity and discontinuity; it is about India dealing with a familiar leader who is moving America into unfamiliar terrain. India had a good run with President Trump in his first term, and Delhi is now dealing with a different leader."

"So far so good, but the delicateness of the Indian task in Washington this week should not be underestimated. As Jaishankar put it, the test that Trump presents Indian diplomacy in his second term is quite “out of syllabus”."

PM Modi US Visit Live Updates | Trade and tariffs: What else is on the agenda?

United States President Donald Trump, in his second tenure, is revisiting the trade relationship and imposing tariffs across the sectors.

He has announced a sweeping 25% tariff for Mexico and Canadian goods, only to pause it for a month after having talks with their leaders.

However, Trump imposed a 10% tariff on China, escalating the fear of a wider trade war. Though Trump has trained his gun on India as well and described Delhi as a “tariff king” and “abuser” of tariffs in the past.

The US President has typically used threats of tariffs to negotiate better deals, and India has already slashed tariffs on high-end motorcycles and electric batteries ahead of Modi’s visit to smoothen the conversation.

A trade deal was being negotiated in the first term of the Trump administration, but couldn’t come to fruition.

PM Modi US Visit Live Updates | Deportation and immigration: Here's the agenda of PM Modi's visit to the US -

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit the United States Wednesday evening for high-stakes talks with US president Donald Trump.

    Deportation and immigration

The visit comes amid a fresh immigration and deportation controversy shadowing the two countries. What is this controversy all about?

The Trump administration recently sent back a batch of 104 Indian illegal immigrants who were chained and boarded on a military aircraft.

According to reports, another 800 individuals, 487 Indian citizens and 298 others in the final stages of verification are bound to be deported soon. Delhi has backed its citizens but “registered concerns” about the treatment of Indians by the American administration.

For India, receiving illegal immigrants is part of complying with international law, but the handcuffs and shackles — part of US SOP — carry the politically damaging perception of “weakness” vis-à-vis another country.

As such, the humane treatment of Indian deportees will likely come up during Modi’s meeting with Trump. Moreover, ndia would like to ensure that the movement of Indians to the US through legal channels — for study, work, or tourism — is not affected.

    Shubhajit Roy explains.
