In talks for four days now, some members of the central committee of Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s party have not favourably evaluated his official visit to India in June, it is learnt. At a meeting with the Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist Centre (CPN-MC), the members said this visible tilt towards India — described by ‘Prachanda’ as historic — will anger China. Parsuram Tamang, one such committee member, warned that such a situation is not ideal for the Himalayan country which has long pursued a non-aligned foreign policy with China.

The talks, over the past days, have been dominated by criticism of the party and the government over alleged instances of corruption. The leadership, however, continued to feebly defend against the criticism.

The Deputy Secretary-General of CPN-MC, Janardan Sharma, accused Prachanda of playing double games. “You asked me to oppose any non-party member being considered for the President’s position and I complied, much against my own belief,” he said. “But in the end, a Congress person was elected.”

Sharma also indirectly accused the PM of backing people in the party who acted against him during his tenure as a minister.

The participants of the meeting told The Indian Express that Prachanda continued to come under fire for promoting his daughter in politics at the cost other senior leadership.

Earlier, Sharma had suggested that the senior leaders, at least one-third of them, must be ready to vacate their positions to pave for younger leadership. “I’ m ready to be the first one”, he had said .

The committee members also demanded the resignation of the Deputy Prime Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha over the alleged cases of corruption.
