Elon Musk has strongly criticised a major tax and spending bill backed by US President Donald Trump, calling it a “disgusting abomination” in a post on X.

Musk’s comments come as Trump urges Senate Republicans to pass the legislation, which he has called the “big, beautiful bill”. The bill has already been approved by the House of Representatives.

“I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore,” Musk wrote on Tuesday. “This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”

Musk had been leading a government effort to improve cost-cutting and efficiency, after being appointed by Trump. During that time, he pushed for changes at several federal agencies, though he did not achieve the large savings he had hoped for.

His formal role as a special government employee with the Department of Government Efficiency ended last week.

The sweeping tax and spending legislation, which Trump has called his “big, beautiful bill,” narrowly passed the House of Representatives last month by a single vote. It is now being reviewed by the Senate.

Fiscal conservatives have criticised the bill, warning it could add trillions to the national debt at a time when investors are already concerned about the US’s growing deficit.

Supporters of Elon Musk’s now-disbanded Department of Government Efficiency also known as “Doge” have raised concerns that the bill would reverse savings made under the initiative.

In a post on X, Musk said, “This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it, you know you did wrong.”

Asked about Musk’s comments, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said: “Look, the president already knows where Elon Musk stood on this bill. It doesn’t change the president’s opinion. This is one big, beautiful bill, and he’s sticking to it.”
