According to The Associated Press, this is the first time investigators have settled on a suspect in an act that had long vexed law enforcement.
The pipe bombs were placed on the evening of January 5, 2021, near the offices of the Democratic and Republican national committees in the District of Columbia. Nobody was hurt before the bombs were rendered safe, but the FBI has said both devices could have been lethal.
The bombs were discovered on the same day supporters of Donald Trump stormed Congress in an attempt to stop lawmakers from certifying Democrat Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential election victory.
The FBI had announced a reward of up to $500,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the individual responsible for placing the bombs.
The FBI had also released surveillance videos, showing the suspect on South Capitol Street. In the video, the suspect was seen setting down their backpack, which is believed to contain one of the bombs at this time. The suspect appeared to put on a pair of glasses and scan the area, standing on tiptoes before picking up the backpack, turning around, and heading back the way they came on South Capitol Street.

An official told AP, on the condition of anonymity, that he arrest took place Thursday morning and the suspect is a man.
No other details were immediately available, including the charges the person might face.
