‘More important than ever that we stand united’: Donald Trump appeals to Americans after assassination attempt

In a statement after the incident, US House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson called for the “heated” political rhetoric in the country to be dialed down.

Earlier today, the former US President had shared details about the attack on him on his social platform Truth. “I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear,” he posted, adding that “much bleeding took place.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had identified the person who shot at the former US president during an election rally in western Pennsylvania on Saturday as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. The agency said that the attack was being investigated as an assassination attempt.

According to a statement by the Secret Service, the shooter was killed, one rally attendee was deceased, and two other spectators were injured.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his concern for Trump, wishing him a speedy recovery. “Deeply concerned by the attack on my friend, former President Donald Trump. Strongly condemn the incident. Violence has no place in politics and democracies. Wish him a speedy recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased, those injured and the American people,” Modi posted on X.

World leaders, including British PM Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, Japanese PM Fumio Kishida, Italian PM Giorgia Meloni and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, also condemned the attack.
