Former Hasina govt minister Anisul Huq, her advisor Salman Rahman arrested in Dhaka

According to the report, the police took them into custody while they were attempting to flee by waterway from the Sadarghat area of the capital on Tuesday.

In the aftermath of a murder case filed against Bangladesh’s ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and six others over the death of a grocery shop owner during last month’s violent clashes, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s adviser Salman F Rahman and former law minister Anisul Huq have been arrested, Dhaka Tribune reported.

According to the report, the police took them into custody with regard to a New Market police station case while they were attempting to flee by waterway from the Sadarghat area of the capital on Tuesday.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mainul Hosein told Bangladeshi daily Prothom Alo that the two were arrested in a case filed at New Market police station.

According to police sources, who spoke to Prothom Alo, two people were killed in a clash in front of Dhaka College on July 16 during an anti-discrimination student movement demanding quota reform. Two cases were filed with the police station in this connection. Two people have been arrested in connection with the murders.

Later, the police arrested Salman F Rahman and former law minister Anisul Huq from Dhaka’s Sadarghat area while they were fleeing by boat, according to a short message sent by DMP’s public relations department (media), accessed by Prothom Alo.

Members of Sheikh Hasina’s cabinet have been in hiding since she resigned as prime minister and left the country on August 5 in the face of student protests. Awami League leaders are also in hiding. Some have fled the country, reported Prothom Alo.

Advocate Anisul Huq was elected Awami League MP from Brahmanbaria-4 (Akhaura and Kasba) in 2014. He was made the law minister then. Since then, he has been the law minister.

Salman F Rahman is a former president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) and one of the founders of the Beximco Group. He was also the private sector adviser to Awami League President Sheikh Hasina.

In the 2018 election, Salman F Rahman became a member of parliament from the Awami League by winning the Dhaka-1 constituency. Later, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina appointed him as her private industry and investment adviser.
