Nagarjuna and Amala Akkineni have been married for 33 years. Although they tied the knot in 1992, their story began in 1987, when Amala—already a well-known face in the Tamil film industry—made her Telugu debut opposite Nagarjuna in Kirayi Dada. Between 1987 and 1991, she appeared in 11 Telugu films, starring alongside Nagarjuna in five of them. Their on-screen chemistry gradually blossomed into love. In 1992, two years after his divorce from his first wife, Lakshmi Daggubati, Nagarjuna married his co-star Amala Mukherjee.
Now, decades later, Amala reflects on their relationship and how similar they are as individuals. Speaking to NTV, she said, “Just as I take interest in different subjects and love talking about them, Nagarjuna is the same. He may not publicly seek conversations on everything, but he is a very curious person with a vast understanding of many subjects. Whenever we talk, it’s usually to share what we have learned or what we are curious about. We often take interest in each other’s work and whatever we are involved in.”
When asked whether they ever disagree with each other, Amala clarified that rather than disagreements, they occasionally express concern over each other’s choices.
She explained, “He may not disagree with me on certain things, but he often expresses concerns. For example, I am very spiritual and practice Vipassana meditation. This form of spirituality doesn’t involve a guru; it’s a skill you learn yourself. Because of my spiritual approach to life, many gurus approach me to associate with them or help launch their books. Nagarjuna gets extremely concerned. He fears I might get scammed. With all due respect to those who are genuine, there are others who are not.”
She added, “So in that way, Nagarjuna always shares his opinion on everything I do, which I appreciate—but I don’t blindly follow him. And I do the same for him, and he listens.”
Beyond their personal life, Nagarjuna also supports Amala in her professional commitments. While Amala currently serves as the Director of Annapurna College of Film and Media in Hyderabad, Nagarjuna is the institution’s Chairperson. “Nagarjuna actively takes part in the functioning of the college,” she said. “As Chairman of the board, he’s involved in daily discussions. He guides us and is the point of contact for everything.”
Amala also shared how her husband occasionally follows her all-vegan lifestyle. “Nagarjuna sometimes goes on a vegan diet for an entire week and says, ‘Wow, I’m feeling so good.’ But if he eats non-vegetarian food, he comes back and says, ‘Why didn’t you stop me from having it?’” she laughed.
Amala herself stopped eating non-vegetarian food at the age of 11.
