Indonesia Earthquake Today: An earthquake measuring

6.4 in magnitude struck the northern Sumatra in Indonesia in the Indian Ocean region on Thursday. The National Centre for Seismology said that the tremor was recorded at 10.26am.

The epicentre located at a depth of 10km and lay about 515km south-southeast of Campbell Bay, Andaman and Nicobar, 606 km west of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and over 1000 km south-southeast of Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar islands.

Generally, earthquakes of this magnitude are capable of triggering tsunami and the analysis for the same is underway, said the Hyderabad-based National Centre for Ocean Information and Services (INCOIS).

” So far there is no confirmation about the triggering of a tsunami. An investigation is under way to determine if a tsunami has been triggered. The Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre at INCOIS will monitor sea level gauges near epicentre and report if any tsunami wave activity has occurred,” INCOIS said in its earthquake bulletin issued on Thursday, soon after the earthquake.
