Apara Ekadashi 2025: Ekadashi is one of the most significant days in Hinduism, during which devotees worship Lord Vishnu and observe a fast to receive blessings from him and attain salvation from past sins. It is one of the 24 Ekadashis celebrated annually in honour of Lord Vishnu.
Apara translates to “limitless,” and devotees believe that observing Apara Ekadashi fast with devotion can achieve moksha, cleanse all sins, and achieve unlimited prosperity, success, and spiritual growth.
Also referred to as Achala Ekadashi, it is observed on the eleventh day, or Ekadashi Tithi, of Krishna Paksha in the month of Jayeshtha, corresponding to May in the Gregorian calendar.
According to Drik Panchang, Apara Ekadashi fast will be observed on Friday, May 23, 2025, with Ekadashi Tithi beginning on May 22 at 1:12 AM and ending at 10:29 PM on May 23.
The ending of the Ekadashi fast, referred to as Parana, takes place after daybreak on the following day; it is crucial to break the Ekadashi fast before the onset of the Dwadashi Tithi.
This year, the Parana will be observed on May 24, 2025, between 5:25 AM and 8:10 AM, and Dwadashi, concluding at 7:20 PM on May 24, 2025.
According to ISKCON, the mythological legend associated with Apara Ekadashi is narrated in the Brahma Vaivarta Purana. It is about the story of King Harishchandra, who faced immense hardships, including losing his kingdom and family; and following the advice of a sage, he observed the Apara Ekadashi fast with utmost devotion, and pleased with his penance, Lord Vishnu restored his kingdom and reunited him with his family.
For the Apara Ekadashi Vrat Katha, Lord Krishna himself told about the significance of Apara Ekadashi in the Padma Purana. Check here to find the full fasting story in Hindi.
