— “Five Eyes” refers to an intelligence-sharing alliance of the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

— According to the Canadian government’s website, “These partner countries share a broad range of intelligence with one another in one of the world’s most unified multilateral arrangements. The Five Eyes agreement stands out from other arrangements because the parties are diverse societies, governed by rule of law and robust human rights and are bonded by a common language. These characteristics aid the partners in sharing information to protect their shared national interests.”

— Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva agreed to continue working towards reform in the UN Security Council (UNSC) under the framework of the G4 and L.69 groupings as well as by holding regular bilateral coordination meetings.

— The L.69, a group of developing countries from Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia and the Pacific (Small Island Developing States), also supports UNSC reform.

— The leaders welcomed the increased defence cooperation between India and Brazil including participation in military exercises, exchange of high-level defence delegations, and substantive industry presence in each other’s defence expositions.

FYI:

— Mexico’s government said that at least 27 people died due to Hurricane Otis and four others are still missing after one of the most powerful storms to hit the country smashed into the Pacific beach resort of Acapulco early on Wednesday.

— President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said the government was working to re-establish power and clean up the devastation wrought by the Category 5 hurricane that tore through the southern state of Guerrero, leaving Acapulco incommunicado.

— Nearly 8,400 members of Mexico’s army, air force and national guard were deployed in and near Acapulco to assist in cleanup efforts, the defense ministry said.

— Otis flooded streets, ripped roofs off homes and hotels and severed communications, road and air access. It led to downed phone service and electricity lines made it hard for officials to quickly assess the extent of the damage.
