On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump announced a significant increase in tariffs on Indian goods, to take effect within 24 hours. He stated that while India was offering “zero tariffs” to the United States under a trade deal, it was “not enough” because India continues to “buy oil from Russia.”

Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal has weighed in on the tariff hike on India, calling out what he sees as repeated international attempts to “bully” the country into submission. Responding to the announcement, Goyal shared a strongly worded post on X, emphasising the need for India to pursue self-reliance and assert itself as a global power.

“Every few years, the world reminds us of our place. A threat here, a tariff there. But the message is the same: stay in your lane, India. Global powers will always bully us, unless we take our destiny in our own hands. And the only way to do that is if we collectively decide to become the world’s largest most unapologetic superpower in the world. In economy, in technology, in defense, and most importantly, in ambition. There is absolutely no other way,” Goyal wrote.

The post quickly gained traction, garnering over 80,000 views and sparking a flurry of responses.
One user wrote, “And make less noise about it. Focus more on achieving than on posturing… till we become really strong. Truth is, at ground level, policies are not changing… while everyone already feels we have become a superpower. That’s when reality check hurts us more.”

“Becoming a self-reliant superpower is not a dream but a necessity for India to remain independent. Mock it, laugh at it, but it’s the truth,” another user commented.

“This has to be the goal! We as a country have all the raw ingredients required to achieve this,” wrote a third.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, on Wednesday, called the tariff hike “economic blackmail” and “an attempt to bully India into an unfair trade deal.”

Amid ongoing trade negotiations with the US, which is demanding zero-duty access for all its agricultural and dairy products in the Indian market, on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that India will not compromise on the interests of its farmers and fishermen, regardless of the personal cost. “I know I will have to pay a huge price, but I am ready for it,” he said during his address at the M S Swaminathan Centenary International Conference.
