Malayalis in ISIS: Trust Kerala to come up with a funny take to this serious problem

On Facebook, however, the story has generated a wave of funny memes based on the idea of how things would be in ISIS if Malayalis joined the cadre. As they say, Malayalis are everywhere. They are in every corner of the world. You go to the moon, chances are good you may find one there happily making ‘çhaya’ (tea).

Most of these memes, which are in Malayalam, carry the water-mark of ICU, a popular comedy platform on Facebook that dishes out hundreds of such memes every day. Their page has been ‘liked’ by more than 5.5 lakh people and their content is inherently viral. Almost all the memes that they produce are based on funny sequences lifted from Malayalam films, the likes of which are in plenty.

This one is a conversation between a ‘senior’ terrorist and a ‘junior’ terrorist. The junior asks, “So if you kill a lot of innocent people, you will attain heaven, right?’. The senior replies nonchalantly, “No, you have to shred yourself to pieces as well.”

The one below shows how a Malayali sells off a ‘transistor bomb’ that his ISIS leader had given him to explode. This one is lifted off from a similar comedy sequence from the film ‘Pattanapravesham’.

In this meme below, two guys from Kerala (again lifted from a film) are seen placing conditions before they join ISIS. “Are there any hartals here? We need one every month.” The other guy adds, “Gunfire should only take place between 10 am and 4 pm. If we have to watch someone firing, we need to be paid for that too.” Kerala, as many know, witnesses frequent strikes and is seen as a hub of strong trade unions.

The Congress party unit in Kerala is infamous for its numerous factions, all of which wield tremendous clout and is led by leaders who want their way in the party. So this meme is a play on that. It shows how the ISIS is likely to disintegrate into factions after Malayalis join its ranks.

This one is again based on a popular Malayalam film trilogy based on two CID detectives who are good-for-nothing but are insanely lucky in solving cases. The meme shows two Malayali ISIS terrorists who have been sent to the US to target the White House. Instead, they are frolicking around as tourists.
