Niteen S Dharmawat, an investor and co-founder of Aurum Capital, from Pune, has sparked a conversation about the pressures students face at school after revealing that his eighth-grade son often stays up past midnight to finish school projects.
He explained that even after completing his regular homework, his son is compelled to work late on extra assignments, fearing punishment the next day.
Sharing a short clip on X, Dharmawat wrote, “Schools are useless. This is 12 midnight. 8th std Kid is still doing some nonsense project after completing homework. Terror is such that if he doesn’t do it he won’t be allowed to participate in his favorite PE period. Everyday he is awake till 12-1230.”
He also wrote, “As a parent I’m feeling so helpless from this rotten system. Whatever I was against I have to face it for my kid now.”

The post has gone viral with over three lakh views and numerous reactions to it in the comments. A user wrote, “This is the same story all over India. Those projects r useless and worthless and serves no purpose in real life ever. Such a stupid and outdated education system and no one is ready to reform it. They are wasting time, energy and resources of everyone involved with the student. Such waste of precious human life.”
Another user commented, “Couldn’t agree more …. Most of these projects are not only a sheer waste of time, but also of precious resources like paper! It would be much better if kids weee right some basic life skills in that time instead.”
A third person said, “Time at home is ideally meant for family bonding, learning chores and most importantly playing with friends. Project reports is basically abdication of responsibility by teachers and pushing their legit duties onto parents. If there is learning to be achieved out of this, teachers should make them do it at school. Jobs are super stressful and on top of that parents inevitably end up doing these projects with their children.”
One X user wrote, “It’s time our kids move beyond superficial school projects. Education should prepare them for real-life challenges through practical, skill-based learning.”
