A bizarre incident in Uttar Pradesh’s Auraiya district left residents stunned after a monkey snatched a bag stuffed with cash, climbed a tree and began tossing currency notes into the air.
The episode, captured on video and widely shared on social media, shows Rs 500 notes fluttering down as people on the street scrambled to grab them. According to local reports, the bag belonged to a schoolteacher, Rohitash Chandra, who had withdrawn Rs 80,000 from a bank earlier that day and placed it in his bike’s storage compartment.
Before he could ride away, a monkey leapt onto the vehicle, snatched the bag and scaled a tree. As the animal flung bundles of cash from above, bystanders rushed to collect the scattered notes. Chandra managed to recover around Rs 52,000 with their help, but nearly Rs 28,000 was lost.

The video has gone viral on Instagram and has sparked a mix of amusement and sympathy online. In the video, a bystander can be heard saying, “Mehnat ka paisa hai yaar bechare ka dede yaar” (It’s his hard-earned money, give it back to him), and that hints at people fleeing with the notes.
“Had people been truly honest and generous, they would have returned the money to its rightful owner. Unfortunately, I’m certain that some would have seen it as an opportunity for personal gain and kept it for themselves,” commented an Instagram user.
One user wrote, “Robinhood in action.”
“People shouldn’t have taken a dime,” said one user.
This is not an isolated incident. In July, a US vlogger, popular as Free Spirit Traveler on social media, was ambushed by a bunch monkeys who made away with a chocolate cake, oranges, and other food items. “Get back, get back,” the vlogger yelled as several monkeys stole his food while he was exploring the narrow lanes of Kodaikanal, a hill station in Tamil Nadu.
