Did you know you could travel on a train in India with your pet dogs? Indian Railways permits pets to travel with passengers in AC first class and first-class compartments only, provided that the whole coupe is booked by the passenger or the group of passengers for exclusive use.

Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently reacted to a clip of a woman travelling with her pet dog on a train. The video was originally posted on Instagram by the account thepawfectzazu that is dedicated to the Labrador dog named Zorawar. Posted in February, the video has amassed a whopping 27 million views before it found its way to Twitter.

“I never thought that train journey could be so relaxing,” says a text insert on the video. The video shows a woman sleeping cosily inside a blanket and as someone pats her, she wakes up and reveals her pet dog sleeping next to her in the train coach. Vaishnaw retweeted the clip and wrote, “Indian Railways at your service 24×7.”

“The best thing ever ! I’ve seen many insta posts on taking dogs on Indian railways. One such is a lady with her toddler and 3 indie strays that she adopted. They happily travel across the country. Amazing her posts are,” commented a user.

“Pets are allowed only in AC-I if all 2 (coupe) or 4 (cabin) seats are yours so that no inconvenience is caused to other passengers. Also vaccination and fitness certificates are checked prior to booking of pet,” posted another.

Last year, a blogger named Barsha Dikshit shared a video on Instagram in which she showed how she journeyed with her two dogs. Dikshit wrote in the caption: “Indian Railways is one of the best [means of] transport to carry your pets for longer distances. It takes a lot of stops; [is] well ventilated and has a lot of space for the pets to laze around.”
