‘Loot macha rakhi hai’: Mumbai’s 1BHK listing at Rs 45,000 triggers backlash, netizens call it a ‘chawl’

Mumbai’s exorbitant rental costs are once again in the spotlight, this time due to a one-bedroom apartment (1BHK) in Matunga East that has gone viral. Discussions around the city’s staggering cost of living echo the recent buzz over another tiny apartment that had a washing machine awkwardly placed above a toilet.

A listing for this small apartment with an “old vibe” with a simple living room, bedroom, kitchen, and a loft accessible via a staircase, has sparked outrage online. The steep rent of Rs 45,000 has left many shocked. One viral X post captured the sentiment: “They are renting out an old chawl for Rs 45,000, branding it as ‘old school’ or ‘vintage vibes.’ Capitalism has taken the commodification of poverty to a whole new level,” it said.

Social media users expressed disbelief at both the price and the apartment’s description. One user wrote, “45k for a common toilet shared by 200 others? Errr!” Another user commented, “This looks worse than some govt college Hostels tbh.”

Some users also said that this is the same location where Phir Hera Pheri starring Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal and Suniel Shetty was shot. A user wrote, “Herapheri was shot here.” Another user said, “Phir hera pheri shooting location. Mere paali pe kapda nahi sukhane ka.”
