India has some of the lowest divorce rates in the world. However, in recent years divorce rates have increased, especially in urban areas. While people often file for divorce on the grounds of adultery, cruelty, and desertion, sometimes the reasons can be odd and confusing.

Recently, Tanya Appachu Kaul (@yourinstalawyer), a lawyer and digital content creator, made a video that listed some of the ‘most absurd reasons for divorce’. In the simple Instagram video, she mentioned complaints such as “Wife dressed in vulgar manner during honeymoon”, “Husband is preparing for UPSC & can’t give her any time”, “Wife refused to touch husband’s feet”, and “Wife can’t cook and had to leave to work without breakfast” as grounds for separation.

This video has over one lakh likes so far. Commenting on the video, an Instagram user wrote, “This is what happens when people don’t get to know each other before getting married or this is their first relationship 😅”.

Another person wrote, “it’s 100 times better to be divorced than live with someone you’re not happy with…. I’ve seen marriages of 30-40 years but they’re not happy together… so it’s better to be alone than being in an unhappy marriage … Divorce should be normalised… if there’s no love in the marriage, people should help them get divorced instead of forcing them to live together…”.

In April 2017, the Khaleej Times reported that an Egyptian woman had decided to divorce her husband after he refused to buy her a shawarma. The couple, who reportedly had an arranged marriage, had been married only for 40 days. During the course of the 40 days, the woman apparently asked her husband to take her out somewhere. It was during this outing that she asked him to buy a shawarma wrap and he refused and accused her of exploiting his wealth. The woman then returned to her maternal family and filed for divorce immediately.
