Nozomu Hagihara, a Japanese national living in India, is winning hearts on social media after he credited the country for “Dharma Yoga,” a philosophy he says has profoundly transformed his outlook on life.
In the viral video, Hagihara highlighted the importance of yoga beyond its physical practice, describing it as “a way of living with awareness, kindness, and purpose.” He explained that Dharma Yoga is rooted in the teachings of the Yoga Sutras, especially the principles of Yama (ethical restraint) and Niyama (self-discipline). He added that these form the moral foundation for living with honesty, compassion, and inner balance.
“Dharma Yoga teaches us to live with integrity,” Hagihara wrote, highlighting its key values.
In his Instagram post, he elaborated that Dharma Yoga encourages the embodiment of virtues such as Ahimsa (Non-violence), which calls for compassion toward all living beings; Satya (Truthfulness), which means being honest and authentic with oneself and others; Asteya (Non-stealing), which involves not taking what is not freely given, including another’s time, trust, or energy; Brahmacharya (Moderation), the wise use of physical and mental energy through self-control; and Aparigraha (Non-possessiveness), the practice of letting go of attachment and greed.
Hagihara noted that Dharma Yoga is not merely about physical flexibility but about “the flexibility of the heart and mind.” The video’s caption read, “Yoga is not just about how far we can stretch our bodies. It is about how consciously, kindly, and purposefully we live our lives.”
