IPL 2025: Kavya Maran’s reaction to Sunrisers Hyderabad batsman missing free-hit goes viral; netizens call her ‘perfect meme material’

Sunrisers Hyderabad locked horns with Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk in a high-stakes clash on Friday, desperate to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Friday night was a big one for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH); not just because they finally broke their Chepauk jinx with a win there in six attempts, but also thanks to a top-notch performance from their pace attack that kept their playoff hopes alive. But beyond the on-field action, it was a split-second moment involving team CEO Kavya Maran that ended up stealing the Internet’s attention.

Known for her passionate reactions in the stands, Maran once again became the centre of a viral moment, or rather, two. The first came in the 16th over of SRH’s chase of 155 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Kamindu Mendis was at the crease when CSK’s Noor Ahmad bowled a no-ball, giving Mendis a golden opportunity with a free hit. But instead of cashing in, the SRH batter swung wildly at a loopy delivery outside off and missed completely. The ball spun away, and what should’ve been a momentum-shifting moment turned into a rare free-hit dot ball.

The crowd at Chepauk loved it, but it was Kavya Maran’s reaction that sent social media into a frenzy. Cameras zoomed in just in time to capture her stunned, frustrated expression, an instant meme in the making. Internet personality Mufaddal Vohra posted the clip on X, calling it “epic,” and the Internet did the rest.

One user said, “Kavya Maran is perfect meme material.” Another wrote, “She is like ‘Kya batsman banega re tu!’” Others were more critical, with one saying, “Kavya showing her (lack of) class! What a horrible way to react to her own team’s player missing a shot. Pathetic!” On the flip side, a fan commented, “I’m watching matches of SRH 50 percent just to see her reaction.”

Mendis, to his credit, bounced back from that moment and played a mature hand. His unbeaten 32 off 22 balls, alongside Nitish Kumar Reddy’s 19* ensured SRH got over the line with eight balls to spare, securing their third win of the season.

But Maran’s camera moments weren’t over just yet. In another viral clip from the same match, her celebration quickly turned into disappointment when Harshal Patel dropped a sitter from Ravindra Jadeja. It was another blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, but not for the Internet.

While the spotlight was on Maran in the stands, it was Harshal Patel and Pat Cummins who laid the real foundation for SRH’s win. Patel’s mix of pace and control earned him a match-defining 4/28, while Cummins delivered with a disciplined 2/21 in his quota. Their efforts restricted CSK to a modest 154, with Dewald Brevis’s 42 the only standout knock for the home team.
