Ganesh Chaturthi kick-started on Saturday across the country. To mark the auspicious day, a 140-year-old shop in Kolkata, West Bengal prepared a laddoo weighing 500 kg.

In a video shared by the news agency ANI, the giant laddoo can be seen decorated with a variety of dry fruits and seeds including cashews, almonds, and figs. The top of the laddoo was adorned with kaju barfi and a big modak—the sweet synonymous with Ganesh Chaturthi— and there sat Lord Ganesha’s idol.

The shop is located in the Bhawanipore area of Kolkata.

Speaking to ANI, Priyanka Malik, owner of the shop, said, “Our festive season begins with Ganesh Chaturthi. So, this is a very auspicious day, we try something new every year. Our shop is almost 140 years old. We have prepared this 500-kg laddoo on Ganesh Chaturthi. We will offer this to Lord Ganesh…”

Also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Ganesh Utsav, the 10-day-long festival begins on the fourth day (Chaturthi) of the Hindu month of Bhadrapada, which generally falls between August and September, as per the Gregorian calendar. This year, the festivities began on Saturday, September 7, and will end with Visarjan on September 17, Tuesday.

Lord Ganesha, also known by names like Gajanana, Dhumraketu, Ekdanta, Vakratunda, and Siddhi Vinayaka, is worshipped as the god of wisdom, good fortune, and prosperity.
