A troubling video shot at Mumbai’s iconic Gateway of India has gone viral, sparking fresh concerns about the safety and dignity of foreign women visiting the country. The clip captures a disturbing moment where a solo female tourist is suddenly surrounded by a group of men, several of whom begin snapping selfies with her without consent.

It starts with one man casually approaching the woman and asking for a photo. Without hesitation, he places his hand on her shoulder and clicks a selfie. What follows is a rapid swarm of more men, phones in hand, closing in on her space. In a matter of seconds, she’s encircled by a crowd, nearly 15 men, some filming, others posing, as she stands awkwardly in the middle, uneasy.

Despite the discomfort, the woman manages to stay calm. Towards the end of the clip, she says, “Rs 100 per photo,” a line many online saw as both a clever deflection and a subtle protest against the invasion of her space.

At this point, it’s unclear when the video was filmed, and there’s been no official response or action taken against those involved.

Just weeks after the US State Department issued a fresh travel advisory for India, a viral video has reignited concerns around safety for tourists. The Level-2 advisory, released on June 16, urges American travelers to “exercise increased caution” while visiting India, citing a spike in crimes and the persistent threat of terrorism.

According to the advisory, violent incidents, including sexual assault, are on the rise, particularly in busy public places like tourist hotspots, markets, and transportation centres. It notes that “rape is one of the fastest-growing crimes in India,” adding that potential terror attacks could happen with little or no warning.

Travellers, especially women, are being urged not to venture out alone, to stay alert in public spaces, and to keep up with local news. The State Department also recommends that US citizens register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and stay connected with nearby embassies or consulates during their stay.
