Lucas Ball, YouTuber popular as Pigmie, recently took wellness to an extreme level by attempting to stay on his feet for an entire week without sitting down. Inspired by common health recommendations that suggest standing for two to four hours daily to break up long periods of sitting, Ball pushed the idea further, aiming to stay upright for 16 hours each day. However, he gave up on the fifth day itself.
To prepare for the self-imposed endurance test, he invested in a bamboo standing desk, which he credited with enhancing his focus while working remotely. “I didn’t have time to take a breather and then get distracted,” Ball said.
But the physical impact of prolonged standing became apparent within just a few days. By the third day, Ball reported increasing soreness in his legs and feet, and his posture had started to deteriorate. He also noticed a spike in his snacking habits. “Maybe I was hungry from burning extra calories… I constantly ate throughout the entire day,” he said in the video, as reported by the New York Post.
By the fifth day, the toll on his body had reached a breaking point. Lingering aches, disrupted sleep, and worsening posture prompted Ball to abandon the challenge early. “It looks like I’m starting to form this slouched-over position, especially in the upper back,” he said, although he did observe some improvement in the curvature of his lower spine.
Despite the discomfort, Ball acknowledged the upsides as well. He experienced better digestion and a 30 per cent increase in productivity. However, he also gained a pound, likely due to the constant snacking, and suffered persistent soreness in his knees and hips.
Ball, eventually, concluded that while full-time standing isn’t sustainable, the challenge might benefit if incorporated moderately. “When I start to get fatigued, we’ll bring that desk out,” he said, right before finally sitting down for the first time in five days.
