Keir Starmer, prime minister of the United Kingdom, touched down in Mumbai on Wednesday for his first official visit to India, leading what is being hailed as the largest trade delegation in the history of UK-India relations. The group, featuring 125 leaders from business, academia, and culture, is looking to build on the momentum of the landmark UK-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed in July 2024.
On his first day, Starmer visited the iconic Yash Raj Films studios and met Bollywood star Rani Mukerji. The company also announced plans to produce three major films in the UK next year, highlighting the growing cultural collaboration between the two nations. Yet, it was a lighter moment that quickly grabbed attention online.
A video that has gone viral shows Starmer in a music studio, listening to the legendary track Tujhe Dekha Toh Yeh Jaana Sanam from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. In the clip, he can be seen clearly enjoying the song.
Netizens were quick to react. One commented, “Who isn’t in love with every bit of this movie! Films like DDLJ are truly once in a lifetime…the songs, the emotions, and of course, SRK’s magical presence make it unforgettable.” Another said, “SRK has one more fan,” while a third wryly added, “He’s probably trying to figure out which 50s Hollywood song the tune has been stolen from.”
The connection between the UK and DDLJ isn’t new. The film, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, was partly shot in the UK, and earlier this year, it was celebrated with a bronze statue in London’s Leicester Square as part of its 30-year anniversary. The statue, commemorating an iconic moment from the movie, made DDLJ the first Indian film to be honoured on the famed Scenes in the Square trail.
