The advent of social media has given rise to constant trolling and outrage over nearly every topic imaginable. Yet, one of the long-standing debates on the Internet revolves around the issue of civic sense among Indians. Recently, an old incident resurfaced in which a hotel in Switzerland displayed a notice addressed to Indian guests, urging them not to pack buffet food into their purses or bags.
The incident came to light in 2019, when industrialist Harsh Goenka shared a post on X displaying a notice at a hotel in Switzerland. “Dear guests from India,” the title of the notice read. “The breakfast buffet is open from 7.30 to 10.30 am. Everything you will find on the buffet is freshly prepared and comes from local producers. Please do not take anything with you, the food is for breakfast only. If you would like a lunch bag, you can order it from the service staff and pay for it,” the notice strictly mentioned.
The news came to light recently when a neurosurgeon took to X, claiming he was at a hotel in Switzerland that urged Indians to follow dining etiquette and not take food items in their purses. The post quickly gained momentum with several content creators and public figures adding their stance to the controversy, triggering a debate.
Several users slammed the hotels aboard for only targeting Indians. “It’s not only Indian being a hotelier when I was in Dubai lots of other nationalities were taking food from the buffet and hiding in their hand bag even while the server spoke that it’s not allowed they dint listen, but unfortunately they are targeting only Indian,” Sunil Singh, a London-based chef claimed. “But what’s the problem with that, recently i stayed with Marriott Jaipur , and after breakfast buffet, they asked me if i want to pack something, they were providing proper boxes for that even,” another user commented.
“But why people do it. If you can afford to stay in a 5 star, you can definitely afford your lunch. This is actually very embarrassing and humiliating,” a third user reacted.
