A video of a tiff between pro-Palestine protesters at the University of Virginia and the police has stirred up an internet storm. The incident took place on May 3. Chaotic scenes unfolded as police sprayed tear gas on the protesters.

The now-viral video shows protesters at the university pushing the police while shouting ‘shame on you’. As tensions escalated, the police resorted to using tear gas. The protest turned violent after the school refused to agree to the protesters’ demands.

“Chaos breaks out at University of Virginia as Virginia State Police spray tear gas and arrest pro-Palestine protesters. The incident was triggered after the protests at the school hit a “turning point” on Friday evening,” a user Collin Rugg wrote on X, sharing the video.

“After the school refused to comply with all of the protesters’ demands, the protesters turned their demonstration into an encampment. The school reportedly denied many of their requests including the request to cut academic ties with Israeli institutions,” Rugg added.

The video amassed 2.5 million views on the platform, with users demanding the protesters be prosecuted. Reacting to the video, a user wrote, “These pro-Palestine extremists need to be jailed and prosecuted. Their violent actions and refusal to comply with police cannot stand. This is supposed to be a country of law and order. Let’s start acting like one.”

“Amazing these kids have nothing better to do than freak out over a country that thousands of miles away, while destroying their own,” another user wrote.

According to the New York Times, as many as 25 were arrested at the University of Virginia, and a graduation ceremony at the University of Michigan was briefly disrupted by protesters.
