Google Doodle has unveiled a touching tribute for International Women’s Day 2024, featuring a group of women sharing wisdom across generations within a “quilt embroidered with symbols of progress”. This special Doodle commemorates the courage and abilities of women, recognising their ongoing efforts towards achieving gender equality amidst global challenges.

Marking the first celebration of International Women’s Day by the United Nations in 1975, the Doodle highlights the significance of March 8, which is associated with historic Women’s Day demonstrations in Saint Petersburg and New York City. These demonstrations, despite occurring in different years and places, shared common objectives such as fair employment, voting rights, and access to public office.

This Google Doodle has been illustrated by Doodle artist, Sophie Diao. When questioned about her Google Doodle, Diao revealed that her family gatherings in China, surrounded by her mother’s predominantly female relatives, deeply influenced her artistic vision. Her summers were filled with warmth and togetherness, as she bonded with her grandmother, aunts, cousins, and the wise village elders, cooking and playing cards.

Diao aimed to convey the heartwarming embrace of generations sharing wisdom and cherished moments. She hopes her work encourages people to bridge generational gaps, recognising the value of learning from both past experiences and the fresh perspective of youth.

The progress made by women throughout history owes much to the bravery of those who came before them. As the world celebrates International Women’s Day, Google Doodle reminds us to salute these trailblazers and those who continue to advance their legacy.
