Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, on January 15, 2020, the fifth death anniversary of his father Rocky Johnson, reflected on his sudden passing. In an emotional Instagram video shared on Thursday, the actor opened up about their complex relationship and offered heart-felt advice to men in similar situations.

“My dad passed away suddenly, just like that,” Johnson said, snapping his fingers. “I didn’t get the chance to say goodbye to him.” The anniversary brought back a wave of emotions for the actor, who admitted he woke up feeling “funky” as the weight of unresolved feelings hit him.

Johnson acknowledged that many men, like himself, have complicated relationships with their fathers. Recalling a heated argument they had on Christmas Eve, he said, “We got into a massive fight on the phone, and we never reconciled. I regret that. I’ll always regret that.”

He expressed a deep yearning for one more moment with his dad. “I just wish I could hug him, kiss him on the cheek, look him in the eyes, and say, ‘We’re good’.”

Johnson urged men to take action while there’s still time. “If your dad is still around, heal that,” he said. “You don’t want to be in a position like me, where things were left unresolved. It might feel awkward, it might be uncomfortable, but take that leap.”

“I’d rather you be uncomfortable and reconcile than wake up one day having to write his eulogy. Pull him aside and say, ‘Let’s do our best to squash this’,” the actor said.

On the career front, Dwayne Johnson finished filming his role as Mark Kerr – a real-life mixed martial artist – in The Smashing Machine, a biopic directed by Benny Safdie. Set to be released later this year, the film features an ensemble cast including Emily Blunt, Lyndsey Gavin, Oleksandr Usyk, and Ryan Bader. Inspired by John Hyams’s 2002 HBO documentary of the same name, the movie delves into Kerr’s career while also shedding light on his battles with substance abuse, his 1999 hospitalisation, and his journey through rehab.
