Darwin, the monkey found roaming in Toronto IKEA, lands in sanctuary 11 years later

It is learnt Darwin now lives a blissful life at the StoryBook Farm Primate Sanctuary.

Darwin, the Japanese Rhesus Macaque who had captured hearts and memes in 2012, has gone viral once again.

He rose to fame as a well-dressed monkey in a shearling coat, sporting a diaper since he had managed to escape from his owner’s vehicle, unlocking the car door, and taking a leisurely stroll through the IKEA parking lot in Toronto, Canada.

Fast forward to 2023, and the question on everyone’s mind is, where is Darwin now?

As it turns out, Darwin found a new lease on life at the StoryBook Farm Primate Sanctuary in Ontario. The sanctuary, dedicated to providing a safe haven for primates in need, welcomed Darwin into its fold.

Once this news spread, more people began to keep up with the updates on Darwin. One of the updates tells us that the sanctuary provides him with the freedom to explore the outdoors, bask in the companionship of fellow primates, and live his best life.

One user on Instagram said, “In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight,” while another responded with, “such an icon,” and a third wrote, “Best news I’ve heard all year”.

In 2012 he became a social media sensation with a headline that read, “Stylish but Illegal Monkey Found Roaming Toronto IKEA,” reflecting the uniqueness of the situation. Later on, it had been revealed that owning a Japanese rhesus macaque was illegal in Ontario, adding a layer of complexity to the monkey’s unexpected adventure.
