On Wednesday, French President Emmanuel Macron and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Mazargues War Cemetery in Marseilles and paid tribute to the Indian soldiers who were martyred during the World Wars. Business tycoon Anand Mahindra reacted to it, hailing the global leaders bringing notice to the Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives for France.

Sharing a video of the event, President Macron wrote, “More than 100,000 Indians fought for France in 1914. Ten thousand never returned. They set foot on the soil of Marseille before fighting in the mud of the trenches, unaware that they were marching to their deaths. Their sacrifice binds France and India forever.”

Reacting to the video, Mahindra, on X, wrote, “The heart weeps for these courageous Indian soldiers who were fighting a war on behalf of unwanted rulers. To add insult to injury, their sacrifices were never widely acknowledged. Western filmmakers ignored their contributions in almost every war film they made…It is good to see them back on the world’s radar screen.”

Many social media users took the opportunity to share their views on the event. “Quite True. Good efforts never go unrewarded. Thanks to PM Modi and the Indian Government for this initiative to bring out the courage, contribution and valour of our Bravehearts before the world. Salute,” a user wrote. “True. It’s so unfair that Indian soldiers who bravely fought in WW2 were just not recognised,” another user said.
