Google Maps is getting a new feature that shows real-time ETA and turn-by-turn directions in the route preview. Dubbed ‘Glanceable Directions’, the option lets you also check Maps without having to unlock the phone every time.
Announced in February last year, the new feature also allows users to see where they have to go in the route overview without having to press the ‘Start’ button. It is really helpful since users will be able to check the route in their locality.
And while Maps will automatically re-route if you go off-track when walking, riding a bike or driving a car, the route preview will be adjusted accordingly. The functionality is currently live for those using Google Maps on Android, but we cannot confirm if it is the case for iOS users.
To enable Glanceable Directions, open Google Maps on your device and click on the profile icon from the top right of the screen.
Now, tap on Settings scroll down and click on the option named ‘Navigation Settings’.
Scroll down a bit and enable the toggle named ‘Glanceable directions while navigating’.
Turning it on will enable users to quickly see directions to their destination after they lock their device and turn the screen on. This is pretty handy compared to the previous version, which required users to unlock their lock screen to see directions.
