Google’s generative AI-powered Bard is now called Gemini, available for free. However, to unlock the full potential of the latest generative AI tool, one needs to subscribe to Gemini Advanced, similar to ChatGPT Plus. Priced at Rs 1,950 a month, Gemini Advanced costs similar to ChatGPT Plus in India. However, these two services cater to slightly different audiences.

Here is how Google’s Gemini Advanced fares against OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus:

A similar set of generative AI capabilities

Just like ChatGPT, which gives access to the latest model – GPT-4 Turbo – Gemini Advanced enables users to access the Gemini Ultra 1.0 model, which is better at reasoning, following instructions, coding, and collaboration. Gemini is also capable of generating pictures with just a simple text prompt, similar to ChatGPT.

Both can be accessed on smartphones

Both Gemini Advanced and ChatGPT Plus can be accessed on Android or iOS devices by downloading their respective apps, which are available for free. However, due to its integration with Assistant, Gemini Advanced can also handle certain tasks typically associated with voice assistants. This includes setting an alarm, sending a text message, calling someone, or launching the camera with voice commands.

AI image analysis

You can also use Gemini to click a picture of a subject and analyse it using AI, which can provide more context regarding the subject. This feature is similar to Google’s recently announced “circle to search.” However, in this case, Gemini’s results will not be limited to simply showcasing similar product listings – they can also help you get more information on the subject. These features are available not just to Gemini Advanced subscribers but also to free Gemini users.

Google One benefits

Gemini Advanced also offers Google One benefits, which include up to 2 TB of cloud storage, Gemini in Docs and Gmail, and enhanced Google Meet capabilities, such as longer group video calls and enhanced video quality. While the Google One plan with 2TB storage can be bought for Rs 650 a month, the company includes all those benefits with the Gemini Advanced subscription.

ChatGPT Plus offers GPT Store

One of the biggest advantages of ChatGPT Plus over Gemini Advanced is the GPT Store, which offers custom models powered by ChatGPT, designed to handle specific tasks. Custom versions offer better performance with higher accuracy, as these models have been trained with specific data.

Which one should you opt for?

If you are already a Google One subscriber, then subscribing to Gemini Advanced makes a lot of sense, especially with the bundled Assistant functionalities and Google One benefits. But if you are looking just for a generative AI model, primarily to access various GPTs and the latest generative AI innovations, then subscribing to ChatGPT Plus might be the better option.
