YouTube unveiled new AI features during its ‘Made On’ event on Wednesday, September 18, as part of a broader set of announcements aimed at unlocking “new forms of expression for creators.” Users will soon be able to generate six-second standalone video clips for YouTube Shorts with the help of an AI video model developed by Google Deepmind called Veo.
“For example, if you’re looking through your footage and feel like you’re missing something to help tie it all together, you can effortlessly generate a singular clip that fits right in with the content you’ve already captured,” the Alphabet-owned company said in a blog post. YouTube further stated that these AI-generated clips will be labelled and watermarked using SynthID.
Dream Screen, which lets you generate backgrounds on Shorts, will also be upgraded with Veo to create video backgrounds that are AI-generated. However, these features will only become accessible later this year.
Content creators on the platform will also be able to ask an AI bot for suggestions on video ideas, titles, thumbnails, and outlines via the Inspiration Tab in YouTube Studio.
Communities: It is a new section on a YouTube creator’s channel where fans and creators can connect to discuss videos, share fan art, etc. Communities is currently enabled only for a handful of creators but it will be expanded to other creators later.
Hype: It is a new feature that will let users “hype” the videos posted by creators with a tap. The Hype option will appear below the existing Like button of a video. With more “hypes”, a creator’s video will move up a leaderboard of the top 100 hyped videos. Users can only hype a YouTube video three times per week. The feature will only appear for videos posted by creators who have less than 5,00,000 subscribers.
Automatic Dubbing: This feature lets creators translate audio tracks into different languages before adding them to their videos. It will be rolled out in the coming months and will only support Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Italian to begin with. Automatic Dubbing will also let creators “transfer your tone and intonation, the ambiance of your surroundings – and infuse it into the dubbed audio,” YouTube said. The company also said that it is enabling AI-enhanced reply suggestions in the comments section of the YouTube Studio app.
Jewels and gifts: These are a new set of digital items that fans can give to creators during their live streams. It will initially be launched only for vertical live streams in the US.
YouTube Shopping: The company’s shopping programme that lets YouTube creators share their favourite products with fans, is being expanded to cover Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam. It is already available in the US and South Korea.
Connected TVs: “The number of creators making a majority of their YouTube revenue on TV screens is up more than 30% year over year,” the company said. As a result, YouTube said it is working on improvements that will let TVs play videos or live streams directly from a creator’s channel with streamlined subscription options and easier access to links in descriptions.
