Truecaller has launched a free-to-use, AI-powered voicemail for Android users in India with built-in transcription and spam protection capabilities.

The new voicemail feature uses artificial intelligence (AI) to automatically transcribe messages left by callers when a call goes unanswered. In comparison to traditional voicemail, Truecaller’s offering stores the voice messages on-device as a privacy measure, the caller ID and spam blocking tech company said in a press release on December 18.

Truecaller’s AI-powered voicemail will also come with additional features such as smart call categorisation, spam filtering, and adjustable playback speed. The voicemail can be enabled by all Truecaller users for free in a few minutes, as per the company.

The Stockholm-based company has been gradually strengthening its presence in India, a key market that is rampant with online spam and scams. Recently, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) directed online messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram to ensure continuous SIM-binding for all users in the country as a way to combat rising digital fraud.

“With Truecaller Voicemail, we are fundamentally rethinking how voice messages fit into everyday life — making them free, device-native and seamlessly integrated into the calling experience,” said Rishit Jhunjhunwala, CEO, Truecaller.

“By enabling on-device storage, instant transcription, spam protection, and support for a wide range of Indian languages, we’re removing the friction and limitations of legacy systems. This is a step toward building a more inclusive, intuitive, and trustworthy communication layer — one that works the way people actually communicate today,” he added.

With Truecaller Voicemail, users can record, store, and play messages directly on their device, without dialing voicemail numbers or remembering PINs. The feature supports 12 Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Gujarati, Nepali, Punjabi, Sanskrit and Urdu.

The DoT is also expected to mandate Caller Name Presentation (CNAP) which requires telecom operators to show the KYC-registered name of all incoming callers using Indian phone numbers. While Truecaller provides crowdsourced identity information for incoming calls, allowing users to look up a number’s registered owner without receiving a call from them, CNAP would only disclose the identities of people placing a call, and not expose the identities of people being called.

CNAP will be enabled by default for all users, as per news reports. However, users could have the option to disable seeing the KYC-verified names of people from whom they receive calls.
