Spotify may bring lossless audio as part of a new ‘Music Pro’ subscription

Rumours about Spotify working to bring lossless audio have been circulating the internet for years, but a new piece of code in the app now suggests it will finally be available with a new 'Music Pro' subscription.

In the last few years, Spotify has teased that it will be bringing lossless audio to the platform. While the company hasn’t clarified when the option to stream lossless music will be available, a new code snippet spotted in recent versions of the Spotify app on Android gives us some hope.

Originally known as ‘Spotify HiFi’, the lossless audio option was rumoured to be a part of a much more expensive premium plan called “Supremium”. However, a recent report by The Verge suggests that Spotify has once again changed its mind. Pieces of code in a recent version of the app hint that lossless audio will now be available as part of the ‘Music Pro’ add-on.

The snippets of code, which were spotted by a Reddit user named ‘Hypixely’ are pretty much straightforward, with a piece of code saying – “lossless has arrived” and another one suggesting Spotify supports “up to 24-bit/44.1kHz” FLAC files.

Apart from the ability to listen to lossless music, the new subscription plan will also offer TikTok-like remix features that let users change the tempo of songs and do a lot more. As it turns out, Spotify is also working on a new headphone optimisation feature that uses some sort of ‘patented technology’ to improve the audio quality. It will only work with select models, with the code mentioning ‘Apple AirPods’ as a compatible device.

Last week, Spotify announced a new feature that enables users to create AI-powered playlists using text prompts. However, it is still unclear if the new AI-powered features are part of the ‘Music Pro’ subscription.
