Motorola recently took a jab at South Korean tech giant, Samsung, in a tweet for its “Always on Display” – claiming that the company stole Motorola’s feature. The tweet comes just days before the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 in India on September 2.

Moto US tweeted “In what galaxy is it okay to steal competitor phones’ cool features? #TheOriginalAlwaysOnDisplay #motozdroid” – a wordplay on the word ‘galaxy’, pointing to Samsung’s Galaxy S7/S7 Edge, and the Galaxy Note 7 that carry the always-on display feature. The tweet carried the hashtag “motozdroid”, suggesting that they were the pioneers of the idea.

Motorola introduced their version of the always-on display with the Moto X first generation (2013), allowing for active notifications displayed on a white-on-black lock screen featuring the company’s AMOLED zero-power black using minimal battery.

Always-on display is also featured in the LG G5 that was launched in 2015, which shows a clock display and notification on screen when the phone is in standby. Samsung introduced the always-on display with the Galaxy S7/S7 Edge, and has also brought it to its newly launched Galaxy Note 7 device. The always-on display on Samsung devices features a clock and notifications on the screen when the phone is locked.

As it turns out, not even Motorola is the pioneer of the always-on feature, and might have borrowed it from Nokia’s Lumia series. However, Motorola did have the technology first in a generation before the smartphones – remember the Moto Razr outside display?

In any case, it is for certain that Samsung’s success with the Galaxy S and the Note series is causing trouble for competitors like Motorola, forcing them to lash out.
