We’ve all been there – you put together an amazing Instagram Story showcasing your latest adventure or night out with friends, only to realise as soon as you hit post that you forgot to tag someone. Luckily Instagram has made it easy to go back and add tags to existing Stories without having to delete and re-upload them.
Follow these quick steps to tag someone on an already-posted Instagram Story:
1. Open the Instagram app and tap on your profile picture in the top left corner to access your Stories and locate the Story you want to add a tag to.
3. In the bottom right corner of the screen, tap the three-dot “More” menu.
4. Select “Add Mentions” from the menu options.
5. Type in the username of the account you want to tag. Instagram will display suggested accounts to select from.
6. Tap “Add” once you’ve selected the account(s) to mention.
That’s it! The tagged account will receive a notification that they were mentioned in your Story. While their username won’t appear on the actual post like a tag added pre-posting, they’ll still be able to see, share, and react to your Story like normal.
When you use the “Add Mentions” option to tag a Story after posting, the tagged accounts will receive a notification that they were mentioned in your Story. However, their username will not appear on the actual Story like it does when you tag before posting. In a way, this method is great for when you don’t want your followers to know who’s tagged in your stories – without having to drag their usernames out of the bounds of the Story. It’s also an easier way to tag people since it lets you tag people in bulk.
Given how different this method works from the sticker tagging method, it’s perfect for the following scenarios:
– Forgetting to tag someone before sharing a Story
– Wanting to privately notify someone they’re featured in a post
– Adding relevant brands/partners to a Story after posting
– Tagging multiple people in a memory or #ThrowbackThursday post
