At the recently concluded Made by Google event, the tech giant unveiled several new devices including the Pixel Watch 3 and announced that Google Maps on WearOS will soon allow users to download maps for offline use.
According to a new report by 9to5Google, it looks like Google has started rolling out the update. After updating Google Maps for WearOS to the latest version, you will see a new banner that says “Offline maps on the phone are auto-downloaded to the watch.” The app will also show a new “Offline maps” page located just above the “Settings option.
The report also suggests that in addition to syncing offline maps that are already stored on your phone, Google Maps for WearOS will automatically start downloading a map of your area. However, the app suggests that your WearOS watch will only sync your maps when it is connected to Wi-Fi network and charging.
Similar to Android, the updated version of the app will also give you an idea of how much space it is taking up and let users delete downloaded maps with a single tap. Users can also manage the maps downloaded on smartwatch by tapping on the new “Offline maps” button and choosing the “Manage on Phone” option. It looks like the feature is currently being rolled out in a phased manner, so it might take some time before it is available on your smartwatch.
Last month, Google introduced a new Google Maps tile for WearOS called “Search and Go” and two new watch face complications – Search Maps and Show Map.
