Anshula Kapoor’s skincare staples in her 30s focus on consistency over drama: ‘Having dedicated face towels…’

For those on active treatments such as retinoids, acids, or post-procedure care, a gentle, fresh towel becomes even more critical because the skin is temporarily more fragile.

“Skin in my 30s has one rule: consistency over drama,” says Anshula Kapoor, adding that she likes to keep herself hydrated, change pillowcases regularly, have dedicated face towels, clean her makeup brushes often, and drink her skincare, too. While dedicated face towels may seem like a small detail, they can make a real difference to your skin health, say skin experts. According to Dr Priya Puja, Dermatologist and Regional Medical Head (North & East) at Kaya Limited, this simple hygiene habit can support clearer, calmer, and healthier-looking skin for acne-prone teenagers to adults on active skincare routines.

Do you really need a separate face towel?

According to Dr Priya Puja, facial skin is thinner, more sensitive, and more exposed to environmental stress than the rest of the body. That means anything that touches it regularly, including your towel, matters. Using the same towel for your face and body can transfer sweat, body oils, hair products, deodorant residue and even bathroom germs back onto freshly washed skin, undoing the benefits of a good cleansing routine.

This is especially important for acne-prone or sensitive skin. Shared or multipurpose towels can contribute to clogged pores, breakouts, and flare-ups of existing conditions like acne, dermatitis, or folliculitis. A dedicated face towel is an easy way to reduce this constant “contamination” and give the skin a cleaner, safer surface every day.

What about acne-prone skin?

Most people focus on cleansers and serums, but forget that towels are in direct contact with the face every single day. “Damp towels are an ideal breeding ground for microbes, particularly in humid bathrooms where they never fully dry. Each reuse without proper washing increases the load of bacteria and fungi that come in contact with your skin,” she shared.

For someone with very acne-prone or inflamed skin, Dr Priya Puja explained that the ideal, most hygienic option is to gently pat the face dry with soft disposable tissues or paper towels, as this minimises friction and reduces the transfer of germs from fabric. However, she also acknowledged that this is not a realistic, sustainable choice for most people in the long run, from both environmental and cost perspectives.

In daily life, Dr Puja recommended a more balanced approach: use a dedicated, soft face towel and change it every single day. This helps ensure you are not repeatedly exposing your skin to the same buildup of oil, dirt, and bacteria, while still staying practical and eco-conscious.

“For severe acne or during active flare-ups, patients can temporarily use tissues, then transition back to a clean towel routine once the skin is calmer,” she added.

What kind of face towel is best?

From a dermatologist’s perspective, the ideal face towel should be three things: soft, absorbent, and quick-drying. Dr. Puja recommended:

Soft cotton face towels: Choose good-quality, tightly woven cotton that feels gentle to the touch. Avoid very rough or scratchy fabrics that can cause friction and micro-tears, especially if you have acne, rosacea, or sensitive skin.

Bamboo face towels: Bamboo-based towels are usually very soft and breathable, making them suitable for easily irritated or reactive skin. They tend to feel light on the face and are a good option for those who dislike heavier cotton loops.

Fine microfiber towels: Lightweight and highly absorbent, they work well for oily or combination skin. Choose a smooth, non-abrasive weave and always pat – not rub – to minimise irritation.
