Meta finally seems to be separating Threads from Instagram, meaning users will now be able to delete their account on Threads without deleting their Instagram profile.

Meta’s X (formerly Twitter) competitor – Threads has been constantly getting new features. Now, the company is rolling out a much-requested feature that lets users delete their Threads profile without losing access to Instagram.

According to Instagram head Adam Mosseri, the ability to delete Threads profile independent of the Instagram account is being currently rolled out to everyone.

If you want to delete your Threads profile, open the app on your phone, tap on the profile button at the bottom right and head over to the app settings by clicking on the two lines button that appears on the top right of the screen.

Now, tap on ‘Account’ and you will see a new option called ‘Delete or Deactivate profile’. While the ‘Deactivate Profile’ option will archive everything you have posted on the platform, the ‘Delete’ option will delete your account without affecting the linked Instagram account.

Mosseri says the option to delete an account on Threads is still rolling out, so it might not be available to everyone right away. We tried updating the app to the latest version, but it wasn’t showing up for us.

Until now, Meta had linked Threads account to the user’s Instagram profile. While this allowed users to log in to the X rival using the same credentials as Instagram, it meant that users who deleted their Threads account lost their Instagram account as well.

The X rival is also getting another user-requested feature which makes it easier for users to control if they want to show their Threads posts on other Meta-owned platforms like Facebook and Instagram. The new option is called ‘Suggesting posts on other apps’ and can be found under the ‘Privacy’ section in the app settings.
