Apple’s brand-new Vision Pro headset is already getting put through its paces. And it seems the futuristic wearable can take a bit of a beating.
AppleTrack‘s Sam Kohl went ahead and did what any self-respecting tech YouTube channel would – toss the expensive new device around to see how much abuse it can withstand. That includes bumps, drops, wall collisions – the works.
Turns out the Vision Pro glass holds up surprisingly well to normal wear and tear. Sam Kohl simulated some clumsy household knocks by purposefully banging it against walls. It picked up some scuffs, sure, but no shattering.
You’d probably give yourself a concussion headbutting furniture before cracking that durable front panel. The peripheral speakers are a different story, though, with one dying after several bumps against the wall. Their connections to the headband broke also apart eventually, cutting off their power. The lightweight magnetic light seals also detach super easily during impacts.
Even so, the durability of the front glass was super-impressive, surviving multiple drops from much height. This turns even more praiseworthy when the Vision Pro’s 600 to 650 grams weight is taken into account. It took a whopping eight drops from really high up to finally splinter the Vision Pro’s front glass. Impressively, the twin internal and external screens still worked fine with part of the cover missing.
Of course, if you do manage to smash your Pro’s screen, the repair cost is no joke. $799 without AppleCare, or $299 with their protection plan. For “other damage,” Apple quotes up to $2,399. Yikes.
That said, the durability is quite impressive overall. The Vision Pro might survive some reasonable mishaps as long as it’s not tossed out from the second floor of a building – that fancy cover glass won’t appreciate it.
